Q: Do I have to purchase a book to participate? Which book? How much is it?
A: The Sanity Manual is the text used in the courses. The exercises and explanations in the text are referred to in class, and extra work or reading may be recommended in between classes. The book costs $23.95.

Q: Will there be lectures in the class?
A: Some classes will start with a short lecture or discussion, but the entire class will never be lecture. The purpose of this class is to give participants experience doing exercises and interpreting the results, and lecture will always support that purpose.

Q: What types of exercises will we do in class?
A: I draw upon a wide variety of different types of exercises for the classes. Exercises might include drawing, doing a guided visualization, and various forms of writing. Don't expect to write a short story in every class; the writing may be as little as a few sentences but is designed to access subconscious knowledge and bring it to conscious awareness. For a sample exercise and analysis, see the sample exercise page.

Q: Is there homework?
A: I do recommend that you write at least a page after each class, a short commentary paper reflecting on what the exercise revealed to you about yourself. This recommendation is based on the experience I've had in teaching this course, that in order to get the most out of the exercises, deeper reflection is necessary. In courses taken for credit, this paper is required.

Q: Will I have to share personal information in class?
A: No. Any personal information you do not wish to discuss will be held confidential.

Q: I've already done these types of exercises, why should I take the class?
A: Doing an exercise once doesn't mean you can't ever return to it again. As you change, you can return to an exercise and approach it anew. I return to exercises I've done previously, and learn new things based on doing the exercise from where I am today.

Q: I can read the book on my own, what is the advantage of doing so with a class?
A: Yes. You can read the book on your own. Some people prefer this method, since it allows them to go at their own pce. The advantage to working with a group is that hearing the responses and interpretations of others' exercises can help us recognize aspects of ourselves. See why take a class?

Q: I don't consider myself a writer, can I take the class anyway?
A: Everyone can write, and everyone can use writing to learn more about themselves. The course is not about being a 'Writer', it is about using writing to be the best version of ourselves.
