Books: Life Passages

Excerpt | Reviews

In our daily lives problems are bound to arise. The biggest problems in our lives are the ones we inevitably have to face, like old age, illness, and death. Tyring to avoid our problems or simply not thinking about them may provide temporary relief, but I think there is a better approach. if you directly confront your suffering, you will be in a better position to appreciate the depth and nature of the problem.

–The Dalai Lama, The Art of Happiness

life passagesContrary to what we see in the movies, the Prince does not always marry the Princess and live happily 'ever after' without any effort at all. 'Ever after' may last 50 years. It can involve some radical changes, and some very hard work.

Life Passages is so called because we all go through different phases, or passages, in our lives, and each one changes us forever. If we simply allow these events to wash over us there's little chance of coming to an understanding of what has happened, or of how we have been changed by those events. Some of the passages we may go through can be very hard—divorce, the loss of a loved one, and sickness. Some are magnificently life enhancing, such as the birth of children. All of them beg to be understood.

This book is specifically designed to ask you to reflect on these changes in yourself and in those close to you whether you are the one going through the experience of change, or your child is, or even your parent. You can choose to turn directly to the section that refers to your specific situation, or you can work through the book, using it as a way to reconsider your life up to this point, and beyond. The chapters will ask you to respond to questions, develop images, even to draw diagrams and charts, all as a way to uncover the wisdom that is already within you. You will be given a context for all your responses so that you can find the meaning in what you have written about. This will allow you to take charge of your own life.

All the exercises in this book are the result of two decades of work with people facing change. They allow you to reconsider your life so that you can begin to see it in a new way.
